As Jen and I have been meeting with people, we have been sharing a lot about the 2030 Calling as well as EveryCampus and how they work in tandem. If you are not familiar, EveryCampus is a partnership between InterVarsity, Cru and other ministries to mobilize prayer walks on every campus in the US by January of 2020, and the 2030 Calling is a vision to see witnessing communities on all 2,500 US campuses that have over 1,000 students enrolled.
This is no small task, and or first step is to mobilize prayer on these campuses. Recently for the Collegiate Day of Prayer we saw every campus adopted to be covered in prayer. This was the first time in the history of this event to see this happen! Our next step is to get people ON every campus, walking and praying for the campus. Since EveryCampus launched everycampus.com, we have been hearing stories from prayer walks that have been super encouraging. We wanted to gather and share a few of those stories with you.
This is a story shared with Cru about prayer that happened at Valparaiso: Logan is a freshman student at Valparaiso University in Indiana. During high school, Logan got connected to the nearby Cru movement at Ohio University and attended their Fall Retreat. It was there that he first heard of EveryCampus, Cru’s partnership with InterVarsity to prayer walk every campus in the US before 2020.
When Logan came back to Valparaiso after Fall Retreat, he had a renewed vision for his campus. He talked to two of his friends, Dawson & Eric, and the three of them decided to prayer walk their campus. One night after their weekly Bible Study, they left their dorm around 10:30 pm for a quick 30-minute prayer walk through the cold Indiana winter. They began by following the Prayer Guide they found on EveryCampus.com and learned that each of them had a unique vision for how God could move on their campus. What they planned as a 30-minute walk quickly turned into much more.
They ran into a group of 4 college women who they knew were Christians. After explaining what they were up to, the 4 women decided to join them! Along the way, they were also joined by Logan’s RA. The 8 of them spent hours walking around the campus from building to building, praying for the students inside and the surrounding campus. They prayed inside of the Math & Engineering building, where every single student at Valpo (a school that specializes in these areas) would eventually have a class. When doors were locked, the Spirit moved them to sing worship songs together.
All of this happened in the middle of the night on the campus of a small school in Indiana. These things happened simply because one student named Logan heard about the vision of EveryCampus and decided to listen to the challenge of the Holy Spirit.
This is just one of many stories around the country that are coming out of the EveryCampus partnership. The gifts that you gave will be used to provide schools like Valparaiso with a budget for outreaches, materials for Bible studies, and conference scholarships.
Thank you again for your willingness to help these students and campuses hear about Jesus!
Here’s another story from Wyoming – Laramie County Community College in Cheyenne:
Our prayer leader, Victoria, has started prayer walks once a week on campus. All the students who were interested signed up to get texts from her about when/where to meet each week. They then go out two by two praying for the campus and asking students if they can pray for them. One week they met and couldn’t find any people just around campus (it can be a ghost town at times) so they walked into the nursing department study lounges that were full of students studying and made a loud announcement asking if anyone wanted prayer. Almost everyone in the room said yes to getting prayed for, so they went around praying for each person one by one. They came to Bible study that week saying, “I can’t believe we did that, and I can’t believe people said yes!”
And here is a report from a Boston campus from CDOP:
Hey there friends,Thanks so much for coming out for the Collegiate Day of Prayer last night—which, as it turned out, was an historic night… because all 4,945 campuses in the US were adopted in prayer by the end of the day! Extraordinary, eh? And we got to be part of it here in Boston! Here’s a brief snapshot of our time together:
- 25 of us gathered to pray last night
- 16 different organizations, churches, or campus reps took part
- 39 specific campuses were prayed for by name, representing 5 of the 6 New England states
- 46 prayer walks on New England campuses were committed to this semester… and we’re just getting started!
We have found these stories to be encouraging, and we hope you do too. Will you consider finding a campus, or a few, from everycampus.com to prayer walk?
